Lemonade Joe
CZECH REPUBLIC
Dir.Oldrich Lipský. 1964, 84 mins. Czech New Wave political satire meets Hollywood westerns and musicals in the raucous Lemonade Joe, the story of a yellow-clad cowboy with a good-natured grin and an unquenchable thirst for justice and Kolaloka lemonade (Joe also happens to be a traveling salesman for the brand). This silly and sharp comedy became an international cult favorite, and one of the earliest and most original western genre spoofs. (Not rated). Presented with support from the Czech Center New York

Dir. Abbas Kiarostami. 2010, 106 mins. In this playful and provocative romantic drama from the legendary Kiarostami—his first film made outside of Iran—Juliet Binoche plays a gallery owner living in a Tuscan village. Her encounter with a British author over the course of a day takes increasingly perplexing turns, as Kiarostami slyly plays with the rules of narrative. Binoche won the best actress award at Cannes.
