La dolce vita

Dir. Federico Fellini. 1960, 174 mins. 35mm. In Italian with English subtitles. With Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée. A city symphony, personal epic, and pinpoint-accurate portrait of a specific moment in time, La dolce vita may be Fellini’s grandest achievement. Over the course of one hedonistic week, Mastroianni’s playboy gossip columnist Marcello bounces from party to party, woman to woman, all in search of the ultimate good time. At the end of seven days, he’s likely none the wiser about what he’s actually looking for out of life. From the climactic debauched party set piece to the indelible scene on the beach this film is one of the most lucid cinematic statements of the sixties.
