South Korea. Dir. Hong Sang-soo. 2012, 89 mins. With Isabelle Huppert, Kwon Hye Hyo, Jung Yu Mi. In Hong Sang-soo’s hilarious and intelligent new work, he teams with French superstar Isabelle Huppert to create a formally inventive and witty three-part film, in which different but strikingly similar women—all named Anne, and all played by Huppert—meet and interact with the same group of people in a seaside Korean town, with each encounter producing a set of intriguing new outcomes and new possibilities. Richard Brody stated of this slyly delightful work, “Hong’s briskly assertive drypoint style of long takes and sharp zooms has never been more expansive in its view of riotous misunderstandings and erotic misadventures; he keeps his nested plots spinning whimsically, lending them a delicate lilt even while infusing them with pain, jealousy, frustration, lust, and conflict.”
