Journey to Italy
Dir. Roberto Rossellini. 1954, 86 mins. DCP. New restoration. With Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders. Rossellini’s astonishing portrait of a marriage in decline, set against the backdrop of the Naples countryside, is one of the most influential movies ever made, a work that many critics now believe ushered in the modern era in filmmaking. As the couple, on a trip from England and aware they are reaching the end of their relationship, Bergman and Sanders give remarkable, career-best performances. Rossellini’s epiphanic conclusion is among cinema’s great scenes.
