Screening
Reds
Sunday, July 14, 2013, 2:00 p.m.
Dir. Warren Beatty. 1981, 195 mins., plus intermission. 35mm. With Beatty, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Maureen Stapleton. Director Beatty and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro won Oscars for this immense film based on the true story of American journalist John Reed, caught up in the heady excitement of the Russian Revolution. Reds is one of the last major epics made in the classic Hollywood mold. The film’s grand scale never overwhelms the even grander passions at the heart of this superb production, featuring one of Keaton’s best performances as journalist Louise Bryant.
