This true-life boxing saga is a gripping family drama about the rivalry between two brothers, and between a controlling mother-manager and her son’s girlfriend. Gaining atmosphere from its Lowell, Massachusetts setting, this film has a number of indelible performances, including Melissa Leo’s Academy Award-winning portrayal of the mother. A labor of love for producer/star Wahlberg, the film is also a dazzling comeback of sorts for Russell, making his first feature film in six years.
