The Grifters
Dir. Stephen Frears. 1990, 110 mins. Digital projection. With Anjelica Huston, John Cusack, Annette Bening. “Seduction, betrayal, murder. Who’s conning who?” was the tagline for this crackling, sexy, and lovingly crafted adaptation and updating of a 1950s novel by pulp-fiction master Jim Thompson. Cusack is a small-time twenty-something con man who is in over his head with the two con-women in his life, his seductive girlfriend (in a star-making role by Annette Bening) and his mother, played with steely authority by Anjelica Huston.
