Sidewalk Stories
With writer-director Charles Lane in person
Part of Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner Inc.
Dir. Charles Lane. 1989, 98 mins. Restored DCP from Carlotta Films. With Charles Lane, Nicole Alysia, Sandye Wilson, Darnell Williams, Trula Hoosier. A silent black-and-white film made on the streets of New York, Sidewalk Stories was a landmark American independent feature. A moving and funny homage to Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid, it is a touching film about a homeless African-American man raising a small child. At once a valentine to New York City and a tough-minded portrait of poverty in a prosperous city, Sidewalk Stories followed She’s Gotta Have It and Boyz n the Hood as breakthrough films for black filmmakers. In his rave review, Roger Ebert called Sidewalk Stories “as powerful as it is entertaining.” The screening will be followed by a conversation with Lane, moderated by Warrington Hudlin.
