The Ice Harvest
Dir. Harold Ramis. 2005, 92 mins. 35mm. With John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton, Connie Nielsen. Ramis’s penultimate film is one of the most impressive accomplishments of his career—a beautifully made and darkly comic caper in which a pair of underlings rob their mob boss of two million dollars on Christmas Eve and must go on the run in typical film noir fashion. Ramis masterfully blends cynical laughs, deep emotions, and and the comically contrasting performances of Cusack, Thornton, and Nielsen. This wonderfully observed film was co-written by Richard Russo and Robert Benton.
