Winchester ‘73

Dir. Anthony Mann. 1950, 92 mins. 35mm. With James Stewart, Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea. Mann’s favorite among his westerns (and his most acclaimed and analyzed) marked the director’s first historic teaming with James Stewart. The ingenious premise follows a Winchester rifle being passed between a drifter seeking revenge (Stewart), an Indian trader, an Indian chief (Rock Hudson), an outlaw, and a bank robber. Filmed in Arizona, Winchester ‘73 unites the western genre and the Greek tragedy, with Stewart embodying the quintessential, morally flawed Mann protagonist.
