DESCRIPTION:This screening replaces Women of the Night which was cancelled
due to a print shipping issue.\n\n\n\nDir. Kenji Mizoguchi. 1939\, 143 min
 s. 35mm print from the Japan Foundation. With Shotaro Hanayagi\, Kokichi T
 akada\, Gonjuro Kawarazaki\, Kakuko Mori. In nineteenth-century Meiji-era
Tokyo\, a young actor\, Kikunosuke\, breaks away from his adoptive father’
s Kabuki practice after a family servant\, Otoku\, is dismissed. When they
are reunited as lovers\, Otoku encourages Kikunosuke to rededicate himsel
f to his art—he is an oyama\, playing female roles\, but she is the one wh
o makes the ultimate sacrifice. Mizoguchi’s first film for Shochiku Studio
s is a key work in defining his mature style\, encapsulating his ideas on
the vampiric nature of artistic production\, and altogether making for wha
t scholar Joan Mellen called “one of the most brilliant satires of the Jap
anese family system.” \n\n\nFree with Museum admission on a first-come\, f
irst-served basis. Museum members may reserve tickets in advance by callin
