Mars Attacks!

Dir. Tim Burton. 1996, 106 mins. 35mm. With Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito. Tim Burton and a star-studded cast (everyone from Michael J. Fox and Tom Jones to Rod Steiger and Sylvia Sidney pops up) gleefully riff on 1950s sci-fi schlock in this delightful goofball satire about an invasion of ray gun-wielding Martians. The ingenious production design is a marvel of deliberate tackiness: “even when the special effects are a parody of 1950s cheesiness, they have a funky, ramshackle beauty—the wonder of a puppet show that almost looks real” (Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly).
