Some Came Running
Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1958, 137 mins. 35mm. With Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin. Minnelli’s phenomenally directed and acted tale of rootlessness in post–World War II America stars Sinatra as a war veteran and former writer who has fallen into alcoholism, and who returns to his Indiana hometown to find nothing is quite as he remembered it. Martin is the unrepentant gambler whom he befriends, and MacLaine is heartbreaking in a signature early role as a wayward floozy who limps after him, hoping he will love her. This CinemaScope adaptation of James Jones’s novel builds to a frenetic climax, and is easily one of the great American melodramas of the 1950s.
