Dir. Rouben Mamoulian. 1929, 80 minutes. 35mm. With Helen Morgan. Mamoulian’s directorial debut—shot at the Astoria studio—stars legendary torch singer Helen Morgan as a boozy burlesque queen on a downward slide. Breaking free of the constraints of early sound technology, Mamoulian’s remarkably expressive camerawork captures the atmosphere of New York’s 1920s vaudeville scene.
