Silk Stockings
Dir. Rouben Mamoulian. 1957, 117 minutes. 35mm. With Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Janis Paige, Peter Lorre. Mamoulian, who left Russia during the revolution, cast a satirical eye on his homeland in this eye-popping musical remake of Ninotchka, bursting with Cole Porter tunes. Cyd Charisse is the humorless Soviet envoy, and Fred Astaire the American charmer who introduces her to the joys of living (and capitalism).
