The Strange Little Cat (Das merkwürdige Kätzchen)
Dir. Ramon Zürcher. 2013, 72 mins. DCP. With Leon Alan Beiersdorf, Matthias Dittmer, Lea Draeger. This enchantingly offbeat debut from video artist-turned-filmmaker Ramon Zürcher may be set within the confines of a cramped Berlin apartment, but it contains multitudes. Made with the inventiveness of Jacques Tati, Zürcher’s observant camera finds unexpected magic in the minutest of details: a moth flitting from room to room, a toy helicopter in flight, the perpetual whirring of kitchen appliances. Meanwhile, amidst the elegantly choreographed action and deadpan-comic tone, an undercurrent of anxiety emerges, altogether deepening the mystery of the film’s quiet spell.
