SCREENING
Shane
Dir. George Stevens. 1953, 118 mins. Archival 35mm IB Technicolor print! With Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin. Nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, and winning for its Technicolor cinematography, George Stevens's western classic stars Alan Ladd as a seen-it-all gunslinger who is ready to hang up his spurs and six-shooter to live with a kindly farming family, but is forced into action to help defend the homesteaders from thugs. Shane was shot in 1.37:1 and famously released in a cropped 1.66:1 frame to capitalize on the new craze for wider screen experiences, but either way retains the magnificent grand panoramic shape of the classic western.
