Belgium. Dir. Bas Devos. 2014, 82 mins. With César De Sutter, Raf Walschaerts, Mira Helmer. This “intensely stylized, highly original and utterly mesmerizing” (Variety) debut feature from Belgian director Bas Devos immediately grabs viewers with its startling opening: the stabbing death of a teen as recorded by a mall’s CCTV cameras. What follows is a senses-shattering exploration of grief, as the victim’s friend, a troubled BMX biker who witnessed the murder, deals with the emotional fallout. Favorably recalling Gus Van Sant’s portraits of teenage angst, this visually stunning drama—shot partly in 65mm—viscerally evokes the disorientation of psychological trauma as it builds towards its heart-stopping final shot. The reception is presented by the General Representation of the Government of Flanders to the U.S.
