Dir. John Ford. 1949, 103 mins. 35mm restored print courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Restoration funding provided by The Film Foundation. With John Wayne, Joanne Dru.With a visual style closely modeled on Remington paintings, Ford tells the elegiac tale of a grizzled old cavalry captain who has one last mission—to prevent a new Indian war—before his impending retirement. Ford leavens the drama with rousing comedic scenes by his company of stock players.
