Dir. Philippe Fernandez. France. 2015. 115 mins. DCP. U.S. Premiere. In this absurdist, intergalactic allegory, director Philippe Fernandez literalizes the paradoxical conventions of science fiction by placing his ensemble cast, a team of seven French astronauts, aboard a spaceship with little to no understanding of where and when they are in the universe or why they have been sent there. Awakening to a mystery of cosmological proportions, the crew attempts to divine their mission through an analysis of their retro-futurist surroundings, but their best efforts to remain practical ultimately dissolve into an extended metaphysical meditation on life, love, matter, and the human condition. Following the film, director Philippe Fernandez will be in conversation with Harvard Professor in History of Science and Physics Peter Galison.
