Mulholland Drive
Dir. David Lynch. 2001, 146 mins. 35mm. With Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring, Justin Theroux. Lynch’s nightmarish yet wildly entertaining tale of that weird place known as Hollywood is like a fractured Sunset Boulevard. Watts gives a star-making performance as Betty Elms, a Pollyanna fresh off the bus who arrives in the city of dreams hoping to become an actress; Lynch then puts her—and us—through the looking glass for a noirish, hypersexual tale of revenge, lust, and shifting identities.
