Badlands
Dir. Terrence Malick. 1973, 95 mins. 35mm. With Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek, Warren Oates. Malick’s directorial debutis a poetic interpretation of a real-life 1950s cross-country killing spree by two young lovers on the run. With its blend of cool irony and genuine romanticism, Badlands is a classic American fable about love and violence. Art director Jack Fisk imbues the locations and landscapes of the idyllic American West with just enough darkness to foretell a fall.
