Dir. Brad Bird. 1999, 90 mins. Digital projection. Brad Bird’s directorial debut, The Iron Giant, was hailed as an instant classic upon its release. Recently remastered and enhanced with the addition of bonus scenes, the heartfelt adventure remains as captivating as ever. In this animated adaptation of Ted Hughes’s Cold War fable, a giant alien robot (Vin Diesel) crash-lands near the small town of Rockwell, Maine in 1957. Imaginative and headstrong nine-year-old boy Hogarth discovers the robot and soon forms an unlikely friendship. But when a paranoid government agent is determined to destroy the iron intruder, Hogarth, the Iron Giant, and their beatnik friend (Harry Connick, Jr) must band together. A captivating animated feature that is part metal, part magic, and all heart.
