Mad Max

Part of Mad Max Weekend
Saturday, May 28, 2016, 4:30 p.m.

Dir. George Miller. 1979, 88 mins. DCP. With Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne. With a bare-bones budget and an unknown lead actor named Mel Gibson, George Miller made one of the pulp masterpieces of the 1970s. In a not-too-distant, dystopian future, speed-crazed, motorbike-riding bandits terrorize the Australian Outback. But when they victimize his wife and son, highway patrolman “Mad” Max Rockatansky (Gibson) turns from lawman to avenging angel in a souped-up Ford Falcon. Featuring some of the most exciting, hyperkinetic action set pieces—and coolest car stunts—ever put on film, the original Mad Max is a model of cinematic invention on a shoestring.
