In Another Country (Da-reun na-ra-e-seo)

Dir. Hong Sang-soo. 2012, 89 mins. DCP. With Isabelle Huppert, Kwon Hye Hyo, Jung Yu Mi. In Hong Sang-soo’s hilarious and intelligent film, he teams with French superstar Isabelle Huppert to create a formally inventive and witty three-part film, in which different but strikingly similar women—all named Anne, and all played by Huppert—meet and interact with the same group of people in a seaside Korean town, with each encounter producing a set of intriguing new outcomes and new possibilities. Richard Brody stated of this slyly delightful work, “Hong’s briskly assertive dry-point style of long takes and sharp zooms has never been more expansive in its view of riotous misunderstandings and erotic misadventures; he keeps his nested plots spinning whimsically, lending them a delicate lilt even while infusing them with pain, jealousy, frustration, lust, and conflict.”
