Screening
Hill of Freedom

Dir. Hong Sang-soo. 2014, 66 mins. DCP. With Ryo Kase, Seo Young-hwa, Youn Yuh-jung, Moon Sori. The story sounds simple, but in Hong’s world nothing is. Mori, a Japanese language teacher, has lost touch with Kwon, a female acquaintance in Seoul, and looks to reconnect by bumming around a café that they used to frequent together. But this capsule synopsis doesn’t begin to describe the unostentatious complexity of Hill of Freedom, a film which is among Hong’s most elaborately constructed works, intertwining multiple time frames. The result is a film that The New Yorker declared a “masterpiece,” though like many of Hong’s movies it has never received a proper release in the United States.
