The Hateful Eight
Saturday, August 20, 2016, 7:00 p.m.
Dir. Quentin Tarantino. 2015. 187 mins. 70mm. With Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bechir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, James Parks, Channing Tatum. The latest film from Quentin Tarantino revisits the American Western by mixing it, as is his wont, with the parlor-game mysteries of Agatha Christie, 1970s exploitation revenge thrillers, and a Reservoir Dogs-style Mexican standoff. Some time after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape bearing bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive captive Daisy Domergue (Leigh). Along the road to Red Rock, where Ruth intends to bring Daisy to justice, they encounter an infamous bounty hunter (Jackson) and a supposed sheriff (Goggins), before being stranded by a blizzard in Minnie's Haberdashery, which harbors four more suspicious—and quite possibly murderous—characters. The film features a score by the legendary Ennio Morricone and was shot in Ultra Panavision 70, a camera process that harkens back to epics of the 1950s and 1960s. The film will be projected with a special Ultra Panavision 70 anamorphic lens, just as Tarantino intended.
