Part of Made You Look: Documenting the Art, History, Power, and Politics of Hip-Hop Culture

Dir. Justin Tipping. 2016, 80 mins. Digital projection. With Jahking Guillory, Christopher Meyer, Christopher Jordan Wallace, Kofi Siriboe, Dante Clark, Mahershala Ali. Brandon (Jahking Guillory) is a small, quiet, fifteen-year-old kid longing for more. A fresh pair of Air Jordans looks like the key, until the pair he scores from a van makes him a target for local baddie Flaco (Kofi Siriboe) and his crew. Brandon, backed by his best friends, decides to risk it all, take on Flaco, and take back the power. Kicks is a bracing portrait of manhood and the pull of sneaker culture set to a pulsing hip-hop soundtrack.
