Dir. Kihachi Okamoto. 1966, 121 mins. 35mm print courtesy of The Japan Foundation and Janus Films. In Japanese with English subtitles. With Tatsuya Nakadai, Toshiro Mifune. Tatsuya Nakadai is one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema, starring in more than 130 movies, by directors including Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Kon Ichikawa, Mikio Naruse, and more. His annual visit to Museum of the Moving Image has become one of the highlights of our programming. For this year’s program, the Museum will present an imported 35mm print of the samurai classic The Sword of Doom, co-starring Nakadai and Toshiro Mifune, and on the occasion of the film’s 50th anniversary. Nakadai plays a gifted swordsman who kills without remorse or mercy, a way of life that ultimately leads to madness. This thrilling drama about a man who chooses to devote his life to evil is one of Nakadai’s greatest performances.
