India/UK. Dir. Richie Mehta. 2016, 86 mins. DCP. U.S. Premiere. In Hindi and English with English subtitles. Over the course of a single day in October 2015, thousands across India recorded and shared moments from their everyday lives, part of a project initiated by executive producers Ridley Scott and Anurag Kashyap. From over 16,000 submissions, director Richie Mehta fashioned a sprawling, richly sensorial mosaic of the sights and sounds of contemporary India. Spanning bustling cities and breathtaking countryside, India in a Day captures an extraordinary range of people, perspectives, and experiences—from women speaking up for their rights to a 112-year-old man who shares reminiscences of Gandhi to a glimpse of the country’s only transgender-run business—that reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the subcontinent.
