White Christmas
Dir. Michael Curtiz. 1953, 120 mins. 35mm. With Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen. Michael Curtiz’s Technicolor, VistaVision dazzler uses the Oscar-winning Irving Berlin song “White Christmas” (written for the 1942 classic Holiday Inn) as the centerpiece for a funny and touching musical about a pair of former WWII army veterans turned Broadway song-and-dance duo who follow a pair of nightclub performer sisters to snowbound Vermont, where they help revitalize a financially failing inn run by the men’s former commanding officer. Rousing numbers, a phenomenally talented cast, and a tear-jerking conclusion mark this high-spirited gem.
