Redstone Theater

Dirs. Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi. 2014, 137 mins. DCP. Featuring archival footage of Barbara Epstein, Stephen Jay Gould, W.H. Auden, Mary McCarthy. An expansive and entertaining profile of the provocative and influential publication The New York Review of Books and its charismatic and indefatigable founding editor, Robert Silvers, who has guided the Review since its launch over a half-century ago, The 50 Year Argument blends together rare archival material, first-hand observational footage filmed in the publication's West Village offices, interviews with contributors (and excerpts from their writing), and original portraits by celebrated photographer Brigitte Lacombe, all marshaled towards illustrating the depth and breadth of the Review, and telling its extraordinary story of intellectual engagement.
