Chuck Berry: Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll

Sunday, April 9, 2017, 7:00 p.m.
Redstone Theater

In memoriam: Chuck Berry

Dir. Taylor Hackford. 1987, 120 mins. 35mm. With Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Etta James, Julian Lennon, Keith Richards, Linda Rondstadt, Bruce Springsteen. Chuck Berry practically invented rock and roll, and on one level, this is a concert film capturing an unforgettable 60th birthday celebration with performances by Berry and many of the great musicians he inspired (including the film's producer, Keith Richards). But in its remarkably candid backstage scenes and interviews, it also reveals the restless and prickly personality of a one-of-a-kind musical genius who resourcefully survived the minefields of an industry filled with deceit, greed, and racial discrimination. The film truly celebrates Berry by showing him to us raw and unvarnished. And, the music is great.
