Minority Report
Dir. Steven Spielberg. 2002. 145 mins. 35mm. Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton.
Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to his career-topping A.I. continues that film’s grand philosophical inquiry, but this time in the service of an ingenious roller coaster ride of sci-fi thrills. Set in a future where U.S. citizens can be arrested for crimes they have not yet committed, Minority Report raises questions of guilt and innocence that seem eerily prescient. It is one of the few films from its era where the ever-present digital effects have not aged a bit. Tom Cruise’s cop, perpetually on the run after being suspected for a “Pre-Crime,” has rarely seemed more convincingly endangered.
