Beyond Zero: 1914–1918. Dir. Bill Morrison. 2014, approx. 65 mins. Digital projection. Working with original 35mm nitrate footage, filmmaker Bill Morrison pieces together physically and chemically degraded film to create a gripping exploration of World War I, transporting viewers into the chaotic maelstrom of battle. Bolstered by a mesmerizing score composed by Aleksandra Vrebalov, Beyond Zero is at once a work of documentation, collaboration, and survival. Preceded by Just Ancient Loops (2012, 25 min). Morrison employs high resolution scans of ancient nitrate footage, as well as newly created CGI renderings, to depict different views of the heavens.
