Presented in 35mm
Dir. Dustin Guy Defa. 2017. 84 mins. 35mm. With Abbi Jacobson, Michael Cera, Tavi Gevinson, Bene Coopersmith, George Sample III, Philip Baker Hall, Isiah Whitlock Jr. During a single day in New York, a variety of characters grapple with the mundane, the unexpected, and the larger questions reverberating through their lives. A record collector hustles for a big score while his heartbroken roommate tries to erase a terrible mistake; a teenager bears witness to her best friend’s new relationship; and a rookie reporter, alongside her overeager supervisor, tries to land a scoop on what might be a murder case. Shot entirely in New York on 16mm, and energized by a soundtrack of deep-cut soul music, Person to Person has a boundless generosity of spirit, effortlessly humanizing its characters and privileging moments of sincere friendship and earnest expression. Cera and Jacobson form a dream comedy team, but the revelation is Coopersmith, a real life record store owner who's also a one-of-a-kind, made-in-New York movie star.
