Part of Changing the Picture and New Adventures in Nonfiction

Dir. Nanfu Wang. 2017, 80 mins. Digital projection. When Chinese filmmaker Nanfu Wang first came to America, Florida seemed like an exotic frontier full of theme parks, prehistoric swamp creatures, and sunburned denizens. It is there that she encounters Dylan, a charismatic young drifter who left a comfortable home and loving family for a life of intentional homelessness. Fascinated by his choice and rejection of society's rules, Wang follows Dylan with her camera on a journey that takes her from city to city across the United States in which she explores the meaning of freedom—and its limits. Wang's follow up to her Oscar shortlisted and Cinema Eye Award–winning debut, Hooligan Sparrow, alternates between first-person travelogue, psychological portraiture, and a shape-shifting thriller. Winner of the 2017 SXSW Special Jury Award for Excellence in Documentary Storytelling, as well as the SXSW LUNA Chicken & Egg Award for Best Documentary Feature directed by a woman.
