Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. William Wyler. 1939, 104 mins. 35mm. With Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon, David Niven, Geraldine Fitzgerald. Perhaps not the most faithful, but surely the most exquisitely cinematic adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Gothic masterpiece about the tragic forbidden love between Cathy, the daughter from a wealthy family, and Heathcliff, whom she had first met as a brooding orphan brought to their home and forced to work as a stable boy. A work of somber intimacy, Wuthering Heights is a triumph for Citizen Kane cinematographer Gregg Toland, who won his only Oscar for the film.
