Dir. Rupert Sanders. 2017, 106 mins. Digital projection. With Scarlett Johansson, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Chin Han, Pilou Abæk. This live-action remake of Mamoru Oshii’s legendary anime stars Scarlett Johannson as Major, a human who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. In the near future, with terrorism reaching a new level with "mind-jacking"—the ability to remote control another person's thoughts and actions—Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. But when she discovers that her life was stolen instead of saved, Major will stop at nothing to recover her past while punishing those responsible. “A soulful action spectacle. There are moments which directly recreate Oshii’s best scenes, with real sets and actors performing a balletic kind of stunt-karaoke.” —Tim Robey, The Telegraph.
