Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Joel Coen. Prod. Ethan Coen. 1984, 99 mins. DCP. With Frances McDormand, John Getz, M. Emmet Walsh. The Coens made a dynamite first impression with their ultra-stylish debut, a cunning mash-up of contemporary western and James M. Cain–style pulp fiction. Deep in the heart of Texas, a honky-tonk saloon owner hires M. Emmet Walsh’s sublimely slimy private detective to murder his unfaithful wife (played by Frances McDormand in her first film). Cue a twisty maze of double-crosses and increasingly berserk violence—including some memorably creative knife-play from McDormand—writ in neon-splashed neo-noir imagery and laced with wicked black humor.
