Part of Getting Close: Ten Great Performances by Glenn Close
Saturday, November 24, 2018, 3:30 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. George Roy Hill. 1982, 136 mins. 35mm. With Robin Williams, Mary Beth Hurt, Glenn Close, John Lithgow. Glenn Close made her movie debut as Jenny Fields, the mother of writer T.S. Garp, in this adaptation of the novel by John Irving. Fields beats Garp (Robin Williams) to the press with a successful autobiography: Her son’s unorthodox conception and her radicalism make her an overnight sensation. In a narrative that spans over 40 years, Garp contends with his unusual upbringing, his marital difficulties, and the feminist community his mother has come to lead. Close was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for a performance that brings humor and sympathy to a complex, potentially forbidding character.
