Dir. Stephen Frears. 1988, 119 mins. 35mm. With John Malkovich, Glenn Close, Uma Thurman, Keanu Reeves. A razor-sharp, pitch-dark tale of seduction and manipulation in aristocratic eighteenth-century France, Dangerous Liaisons had been adapted for the screen from Choderlos de Laclos’s novel several times before, but never with such with fiendish aplomb. Directed by Stephen Frears, this late-1980s classic featured rising stars John Malkovich and Glenn Close making exquisite music from Christopher Hampton’s script. “A first-rate piece of work by a director who’s daring and agile,” raved Pauline Kael in The New Yorker. “It’s heaven—alive in a way that movies rarely are.” Nominated for seven Academy Awards, the film won three (Best Screenplay, Costume, Production Design).
