Part of Getting Close: Ten Great Performances by Glenn Close

Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. Barbet Schroeder. 1990, 111 mins. 35mm. With Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close, Ron Silver. Socialite Sunny von Bulow is in a coma, but she is also the narrator in this innovative adaptation of attorney Alan Dershowitz’s best-selling book. When Sonny’s husband Claus (Jeremy Irons, in an Oscar-winning performance) is convicted of attempted murder, he hires Harvard professor Dershowitz (Ron Silver) to represent him in the retrial. While unconvinced of Claus’s innocence, Dershowitz defends him nevertheless, believing the trial itself is unconstitutional. In flashbacks, Close is perfect as the turbulent Sunny, a woman who is at times an ethereal heiress, and other times gloomy and depressed.
