Dir. Steven Antin. 2010, 119 mins. 35mm. With Cher, Christina Aguilera, Cam Gigandet, Alan Cumming, Julianne Hough, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci. A big, bumptious backstage musical that gave Cher her first real center-stage role after a decade-long absence from leads. Cher plays Tess, the queen bee of a Los Angeles burlesque club where down-on-her-luck wannabe performer Ali (Christina Aguilera) walks through the door one day looking for work. She starts as a waitress before rising rapidly through the ranks of onstage talent thanks to her big, bluesy voice. A dash of All About Eve, a pinch of camp cattiness, and a whole lot of song-and-dance showmanship make for a colorful good time, with Cher embracing her living legend status, presiding over the whole affair in glammy grand dame style.
