Dir. Alfred Hitchcock. 1964, 130 mins. 35mm. With Tippi Hedren, Sean Connery. Hitchcock’s adaptation of WInston Graham’s novel about a serial thief who keeps shifting her identity to steal from her male employers is an coolly Freudian drama of psychological torment, featuring Tippi Hedren in a career-best performance—and a wardrobe of icy elegance. Sean Connery is the publishing magnate who’s on to her tricks and blackmails her into marrying him. In Hitchcock’s hands, a seemingly detached exercise in style is something so much more, escalating to a feverish hothouse climax.
