Wings of Desire

Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Wim Wenders. 1987, 130 mins. DCP. In German and English with English subtitles. With Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander, Peter Falk. Bruno Ganz plays the angel Damiel, who alongside Cassiel (Sander), watches over late-communist Berlin from both high above the city and on the ground, invisibly witnessing and guiding people struggling to get through the day. Yet when he encounters a beautiful acrobat in a traveling circus (Dommartin), he is seduced by the idea of giving up his wings to become human so that he can find her, and finally be seen. Written by Wenders and novelist Peter Handke, and shot in both gorgeous black-and-white and color by Henri Alekan, Wings of Desire is a modern classic that manages to be both fearlessly literate and nakedly emotional, while inchoately anticipating the fall of the Berlin wall two years later—and provided Ganz with his greatest role.
