Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Mike Leigh, 2014, 150 mins. DCP. With Timothy Spall, Paul Jesson, Dorothy Atkinson, Marion Bailey. Not a typical biopic by any measure, Mike Leigh's Mr. Turner explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Turner is deeply affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he occasionally exploits sexually, and forms a close, secret relationship with a seaside landlady. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, and becomes a popular though anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts. As Turner, Timothy Spall gives one of the strongest performances of his career, and cinematographer Dick Pope creates a visual canvas worthy of the great painter.
