The Burglars (Le Casse)

Part of Verneuil Populaire: Vintage Thrillers from France’s Genre Maestro
Sunday, July 28, 2019, 4:30 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater

Dir. Henri Verneuil. 1971, 120 min. DCP courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment. With Jean-Paul Belmondo, Dyan Cannon, Omar Sharif. Belmondo is the leader of a gang of affable burglars in this frantic Euro-caper, defying Omar Sharif’s psychotic cop in a story of stolen emeralds in Greece. The film features two of the greatest action set pieces in French cinema: Belmondo thrown like a rag doll down an enormous pile of rubble, and an unbroken ten minute car chase between a Fiat 124 Special T and a Ford Taunus 12M which is a veritable advert for the adaptability of affordable cars. 120 minutes of pure, unapologetic pleasure.
