Local Hero
Sunday, September 29, 2019, 4:00 p.m.
Museum of the Moving Image - Redstone Theater
Dir. Bill Forsyth. 1983, 111 mins. 35mm. With Burt Lancaster, Peter Riegert, Fulton Mackay. Forsyth’s biggest international success, this David-and-Goliath story about a Texas tycoon’s attempt to buy a Scottish seaside village for its oil supply avoids the predictability that its premise suggests. From Burt Lancaster’s stargazing and eccentric billionaire, to the townspeople who jump at the opportunity to sell off their town and strike it rich, to the philosophical recluse who lives in a shack on the beach, Local Hero is filled with detours and surprises. Like the film itself, the village has a charm all its own that gradually wins the heart of the young executive (Peter Riegert) who is sent to make the deal.
