Dir. Tim Burton. 1988, 92 mins. 35mm. With Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder. Though the married Maitlands (Baldwin and Davis) are killed early on in Tim Burton’s comic ghost classic, they can’t seem to abandon this mortal coil and reassume residence in their old Connecticut home. However, the new owners, save for their moody young daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder at her most spectral) are a boorish lot so the Maitlands make every attempt to frighten them away, but the pair proves to be…not that scary. Enter rogue poltergeist Beetlejuice (Keaton), whose frenetic energy and desire to scare seems at first like the answer to freeing their home, until his unconstrained mania takes a darker turn.
